Quick answer: Closed right now. The 2026–27 recreational Dungeness crab season opens on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the first Saturday in November, and runs through June 30, 2027 south of the Mendocino/Sonoma county line and July 30 north of it. The daily bag limit is 10 crab with a 5¾-inch minimum size, and traps need a $2.98 Recreational Crab Trap Validation. Domoic acid and whale-entanglement risk can delay the opener or restrict traps zone by zone, often with only days of notice.

No California fishery gets interrupted more often than Dungeness crab. The calendar says one thing; domoic acid and whales frequently say another. Here is how to read the whole picture before you load the truck.

The date

The California recreational Dungeness crab season opens on the first Saturday in November. In 2026 that is Saturday, November 7.

AreaRecreational seasonLimits
South of the Mendocino/Sonoma county lineNov 7, 2026 – Jun 30, 202710 crab/day, 5¾” minimum
North of the Mendocino/Sonoma county lineNov 7, 2026 – Jul 30, 202710 crab/day, 5¾” minimum

As of October 26, 2026, CDFW lists the season as reopening November 7 in the Northern, Mendocino, San Francisco and Central regions and has posted no delay for the recreational opener. Delays are usually announced in the last days before it, so check again the week of November 2.

You will also see a different date reported every autumn for “crab season”: that is the commercial fishery, which runs on its own schedule and opens later. The two get conflated in headlines constantly.

The rules

Rock crab is a different species with different rules: 35 per day, 4-inch minimum, open year round. People pull both out of the same pot and apply the wrong limit to whichever one they were thinking about.

Why the opener slips

In most recent seasons the November opener did not happen cleanly. The two causes are unrelated and behave differently.

Domoic acid. A neurotoxin produced by Pseudo-nitzschia blooms, it accumulates in crab viscera. CDFW and CDPH test through the autumn and delay any zone that fails. Because it is measured by zone, the coast can open in pieces: Half Moon Bay open, Bodega Bay closed, two weeks apart. This autumn it is already showing up nearby. Del Norte County’s recreational razor clam fishery has been closed for domoic acid since October 9, and Monterey Bay anchovy has been bait only since September 11. CDFW runs a Domoic Acid Fishery Closure Information Line at (831) 649-2883.

Whale entanglement. Under the Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program (RAMP), when humpbacks, blue whales or leatherback turtles are still feeding in the crabbing grounds, CDFW can delay the season or restrict crab traps in the affected zones. Hoop nets and crab snares usually remain legal during a trap restriction, which is a distinction that saves trips. RAMP also tends to hit the end of the season, with spring trap restrictions that arrive before the calendar close.

Either one lands with days of notice, in a specific zone, by an announcement on a CDFW page. That is the most common way a Californian shows up at a ramp on opening morning with a truck full of pots and no legal fishery.

Gear rules worth knowing

The season is not the advisory

An open season is not a statement that the crab is safe to eat, and a health advisory is not a closure. They come from different agencies and can be in force at the same time.

Domoic acid concentrates in the viscera far more than in the meat, which is why advisories often tell you to eviscerate the crab and discard the cooking water rather than closing the fishery. Following the season and ignoring the advisory is how people get sick during a perfectly legal opener.

Get the delay before you load the truck

Creel scrapes CDFW’s in-season changes and CDPH’s shellfish advisories daily and shows them in the same card as the Dungeness season dates, limit and size for your region. Set a watch on Dungeness crab and you get a reminder the morning before November 7, and a push the moment your zone is delayed instead of the one you happened to read about. It works offline at the ramp before sunrise.

What else opens and closes this autumn →

Crab closures are health-critical: eating crab from a closed zone can cause amnesic shellfish poisoning. Always verify current zone status with CDFW and CDPH before crabbing.

Frequently asked questions

When does crab season open in California in 2026?

Saturday, November 7, 2026 for the recreational fishery, the first Saturday in November. The commercial season runs on its own schedule and opens later, which is why you see two different "crab season" dates every autumn. If you are dropping your own pots or hoop nets off a pier or a private boat, November 7 is your date, subject to any delay CDFW announces for your zone.

Why does Dungeness crab season get delayed in California?

Two independent reasons. Domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by algal blooms, accumulates in crab viscera; CDFW and CDPH test through the autumn and delay any zone that fails. Separately, the Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program watches for humpback and blue whales and leatherback turtles still feeding in the fishing grounds, and can delay the opener or restrict trap gear. Either can move a single zone while the rest of the coast opens on time.

How many Dungeness crab can you keep in California?

Ten per person per day, with a minimum size of 5¾ inches measured across the widest part of the shell, in front of and excluding the points. Rock crab is a separate species with a much larger limit (35 per day at a 4-inch minimum), and the two are easy to confuse in a pot.

Do I need a validation to use a crab trap in California?

Yes. A Recreational Crab Trap Validation costs $2.98 in 2026 and is required for anyone using a crab trap in ocean waters, on top of a sport fishing licence. Hoop nets and crab snares do not need it, and they usually stay legal when traps are restricted for whale entanglement.

Is it safe to eat Dungeness crab right now?

Check before you cook. Domoic acid concentrates in the viscera (the "crab butter") far more than in the meat, which is why health advisories often say to eviscerate the crab and discard the cooking water rather than closing the fishery outright. CDPH issues these independently of the season, so an open season is not by itself an all-clear.

When does California crab season end?

June 30, 2027 south of the Mendocino/Sonoma county line and July 30, 2027 north of it. In-season closures can end it earlier in any zone, and trap restrictions for whale entanglement often arrive in spring, before the calendar close.

What is the best month for Dungeness crabs?

November and December usually produce the fullest, heaviest crab, before winter storms and fishing pressure thin the easy pickings. That is also when delays are most likely, so check your zone before the first drop.
